Repeat Prescriptions

If you require a repeat prescription you must contact the surgery at least 5 working days before you need the medication.

Medication is normally prescribed for 28 days.

The best way to order repeat medication is by logging on to our surgery computer system (SystmOne). This will allow you to view a list of your repeat medication and order what you require.

Creating your account only takes a couple of minutes, we just need a copy of your ID to issue a username and password. For security reasons these details can only be given to you in person. Please therefore call in to the practice, at your convenience.

Other methods of obtaining repeat medication include:

  • Use the repeat slip attached to your prescription and bring it into the surgery.
  • Use the repeat slip attached to your prescription and post to the surgery.

Please note: we cannot take prescription requests over the phone

Please also check the notes on your repeat slip to see if you require a medication review.  Failure to book a medication review may result in your repeat medication request being refused or delayed.

Please do not waste GP appointments - ensure that you remember to request your repeat medication in good time.

If you wish to write a note or request on your online order, please  do so before you tick your repeat items. Please check your request before submitting.

Dispensing

The dispensary is open from 08:30 – 18:30, Monday to Friday. You can get your medicines at the Surgery if you live more than a mile from a Chemist.

Electronic Prescribing Service

This practice is set up for the electronic prescription service.

This means that for most patients we can send your prescription to your chosen chemist directly saving you having to come down to the surgery.

To get your prescription sent to your chosen pharmacy you will have to ask reception to sign up.

Electronic repeat dispensing (eRD) allows the doctors surgery to issue a batch of prescriptions.  This batch is sent to the pharmacy and dispensed at regular intervals without the need for you to reorder your medicines. The batch can last up to one year.  The NHS is encouraging all doctors’ surgeries to use eRD to hep better manage workload in the surgery and in the pharmacy.  eRD is not suitable if you are a dispensing patient at the practice. Benefits to patient

  • Makes it easier for the patient to get their medicines- no need to re-order your medicines via the doctors/ pharmacy. 
  • Less waiting around to receive medicines as the pharmacy can prepare the prescription in advance.

 

How does it work?

  1. Patient is reviewed and all necessary blood tests/ monitoring done
  2. A batch of prescriptions is then authorised by a clinician at the doctors surgery
  3. The pharmacy receive the batch and dispenses them at set intervals
  4. The patient goes to pharmacy to collect prescription/ prescription gets delivered to patients house, no need to contact the doctors surgery
  5. Pharmacy checks with patient on handing out  the medicine that it is still safe and appropriate

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
